Choosing your
wedding invitations can be more difficult than you think!
Here are some tips
to make your shopping excursion go smoothly.
Allow at least 2 hours for your first visit. Yes, your first
visit. It is time consuming, tiring, and a little overwhelming,
to look through several invitation books. Even if you have
a certain look in mind for your invitation, you will still
want to see what else is out there that may catch your eye.
Plan to eat before you go to look at invitations. It
will take the fun out of it if you are fighting hunger pains
while looking through invitation books.
Here are the main decisions
you will need to make:
Style
of the invitation, the reception
card the response card, and thank you card – formal
or casual, with overlays or ribbon, perhaps a picture of the
two of you, color and type of paper, size and shape.
Wording
of the invitation, reception card, and response card. You
will need dates and times, addresses
– for the ceremony, for the reception, for the response
card, and possibly meal choices as well as the correct spelling
of names, including the ceremony and reception sites.
Lettering
– this is the font for all your pieces.
There are generally
30 different
fonts from which to choose.
Ink
Color
– Choose from a dozen or more colors,
some metallic inks are also available.
Envelope
Liner –
do you want one, what color. Several options are available.
You can choose one to match your ink color as shown here.
Place cards
– If you want place cards, this would be a good time
to choose one to coordinate with your invitation.
Number
: You will also need to decide on the
number of invitations to order. Remember, you only need one
invitation per couple, one for each of your single guests,
anyone over age eighteen, even if living with their parents,
should get their own invitation. Be sure to order extras,
the rule of thumb is to order an extra 25.
How long does
it take? You should plan to order your
invitations at least 3 months before your wedding. This allows
time to receive a proof, review and make any changes, for
printing of the invitations, shipping time, and time to assemble,
address and mail.
