Wedding Invitation Ordering

First, decide on how much of your wedding budget you will spend on your wedding stationery, which will include some or all of the following:

  • Save the Date Cards
  • Wedding Invitations
  • Response Cards
  • Menu Cards
  • Place Cards
  • Programs
  • Maps or Directions
  • Thank You Cards
  • Postage

Here are the main decisions you will need to make for your wedding stationery: style, wording, lettering, ink color, envelope liner, place cards, number to order and timing.

STYLE - of the invitation, reception card, response card, and thank you card - formal or casual, color and type of paper, size and shape, with or without embellishments such as overlays or ribbon, maybe a picture of the two of you.

WORDING - of the invitation, reception card, and response card. You will need dates and times, addresses – for the ceremony, for the reception, for the response card, and possibly meal choices, as well as the correct spelling of names, including the ceremony and reception sites.

LETTERING – this is the font for all your pieces. There are generally 30 different fonts from which to choose.

INK COLOR – Choose from a dozen or more colors, some metallic inks are also available.

ENVELOPE LINER – do you want one, what color. Several options are available. You can choose one to match your ink color or to go with your over all color scheme.

PLACE CARDS/ESCORT CARDS– If you want place cards (sometimes called escort cards), this would be a good time to choose one to coordinate with your invitation.

HOW MANY - You will also need to decide on the number of invitations to order. Remember, you only need one invitation per couple, one for each of your single guests, anyone over age eighteen, even if living with their parents, should get their own invitation. Be sure to order extras, the rule of thumb is to order an extra 25.

TIMING : You should plan to order your invitations at least 3 months before your wedding. This allows time to receive a proof, review and make any changes, for printing of the invitations, shipping time, and time to assemble, address and mail.
